Day three is upon us. I was greeted with a 12:30 tip-off.
The morning started early with an open run for prospects trying to get on the UA Rise Circuit.
After that, it was working my way from Herndon to F Street.
Even though it’s a cold Sunday early afternoon, the traffic was very DMV.
I was in this building two days ago and I saw a good one between the Wizards and Knicks.
I hope Georgetown can keep up with Providence and provide a good ending to this 72-hour run.
Before we get to tip, I was asked yesterday why I would choose Georgetown-Providence over Maryland-Northwestern. The game in College Park has more on the line but, if this proves to be the last for head coach, Patrick Ewing, I want to be present.
Ok… let’s get ready for the tip.
First things first, it’s senior day. No, Ewing didn’t modify his starting lineup to give the non-starting seniors a final goodbye. I don’t blame him.
The Hoyas force a shot clock violation in the first 90 seconds of the game. Providence lost track of the clock. It wasn’t necessarily great defense but, heck, the hometown crowd will take it!
Interesting to see Ewing sitting on the bench instead of standing. I haven’t seen that in his six-year tenure.
Once again, Georgetown forces Providence to the end of the shot clock. That time the Hoyas did a good job playing the Friars’ action.
The good feeling doesn’t last for long. Providence is on a 7-0 run.
A Jared Bynum three-pointer followed by a dunk and a layup. Stretches like this have happened way too much this season.
The run keeps getting worse… Friars are on a 15-2 spurt.
We are at the under-12 (10:25). Providence is up 23-13 and the Friars’ leading scorer Bryce Hopkins is on the bench with three fouls.
Friars are on a 24-5 run.
We’re at the under-4 exactly at the four-minute mark. Friars are up 39-25.
Providence has been up by as many as 17 but Georgetown continues to play hard as we’ve season most of the season.
The Friars ended the half on a 7-0 run.
Halftime: Georgetown 27 Providence 46
Hoyas start off the half with an unforced turnover. Friars cash in. Woof.
Providence is up 48-27.
And here goes Georgetown. Punching back in the middle of the ring. Hoyas is on a 12-1 run. Providence is up 49-39.
Georgetown continues to make a run and then the lights flicker on and off. Providence answers Georgetown's run with a 7-0 run of their own.
By the way, Qudus Wahab was here for the Senior Day festivities but, after that, he left. And by left, he’s not even on the bench. No official word but it sounds like he’s under the weather.
Providence has its largest lead. Friars are up 65-42 with 11:52 left.
Ed Croswell has a career-high in both points and assists.
On Georgetown, Jay Heath is having a nice day. Heath is 7-12 from the floor, 5-7 from three. Not bad.
The last possession summed up the season. Down 17, Georgetown had two good looks from three. The first one was passed up and the second one spun in and out.
Then after getting a stop, Bradley Ezewiro misses a layup on a fast break.
We’ve had two live ball stoppages for subs. We are close to there being a running clock.
Final: Providence 88 Georgetown 68
That ends the home schedule for the Hoyas and it looks like it will be the last time we will see this staff on the home bench side.
