Hoyas Showed What Toughness Looks Like (VIP)
On one of the toughest nights of the season, Georgetown showed who they can be.
As Ed Cooley headed to the media scrum on Monday, he didn't have his usual pep in his step.
Media availability is when you get the "full Cooley." The one that makes you laugh with his quick one-liners. He's forthright with what is going right and what is going wrong.
But Monday felt different.
Then he dropped the bomb on us. His mother had died.
As we offered our condolences and wondered why he didn't cancel the availability, he responded by talking about professionalism.
That was the backdrop coming into Wednesday's game with Providence. A coach who had just lost his mother, who was without his best player and top role player, and what was a must-win when you consider that the Hoyas next three games are against Creighton, UConn, and Marquette.
All Georgetown did was put up 93 points in a 21-point win over Providence.
No one had that on their Bingo card, even though the Hoyas scored 86 points in a loss to Butler, where they didn't have Thomas Sorber for most of that game.
Micah Peavy continued to show he is one of the best two-way players in the Big East. Peavy's 30 points was a career-high. If you ask Providence head coach Kim English, Peavy made a pivotal play early on.
"I thought a big play was when we were up 16-11. We went zone. They shot a brick. We got the rebound, and we threw it right to him for a breakaway dunk. I felt like that really got him going. 57 points in two games against us this season." - Kim English
