Georgetown 84
Xavier 91
Kayvaun Mulready scored a career-high 19 points (7-12, 5-9 from 3) but it wasn’t enough in the 91-84 loss at Xavier.
The Hoyas were up by a point at halftime, but the Musketeers scored the first five points of the second half and never looked back.
Georgetown got within two at 61-59 after two Isaiah Abraham free throws but they would get no closer.
Xavier pushed the lead to 10 with 6:58 left on a Flip Borovicanin three-pointer.
Offense
Georgetown’s actions opened up a lot of the floor. With Jeremiah Williams playing extended minutes, there were times when Malik Mack had more open court than he’s had all season.
The Hoyas were a very efficient 12-27 from the three-point line with Mack and Mulready carrying most of the weight from long-distance.
The perimeter shooting helped open more room in the lane. Vince Iwuchukwu and Julius Halaifonua combined for 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Defense
One of the things Georgetown’s couldn’t allow was Xavier to be efficient from the three-point line. In the Musketeers last two games they were 15-54 (27.7%) from three-point range.
That wasn’t an issue today. Xavier would shoot 50% (10-20) from the three-point lead.
The Hoyas weren’t contesting Xavier’s shooter with an acceptable level of pressure. There was too much “I hope they miss” defense especially against a team that isn’t motivated on the defensive end themselves.
If Georgetown plays an acceptable level of defense, this could have been a different outcome.
