Culture: Vick Hiring (VIP)
Michael Vick is the latest NFL player to take an HBCU college football head coaching job
So, an HBCU is rolling the dice on a name once again.
The last we saw this was Tennessee State naming Eddie George as their head coach. In year four, George took the Tigers to the FCS playoffs. Tennessee State fell to Montana in the first round, 41-27. George has proven that he can take a weak program and incrementally build it into a playoff team.
Before George, it was Deion Sanders at Jackson State. Sanders is one of the few HBCU coaches who got a power conference job via an HBCU.
Both George and Sanders had Hall of Fame NFL careers, which, in part, contributed to their getting a chance at being college football head coaches.
The next former NFL player to get a chance is Michael Vick.
Unlike George and Sanders, Vick isn't in the Hall of Fame and never will. George and Sanders might not have been perfect, but they didn't go to jail for fighting dogs.
