My coverage reflects that, and trust me, I hear it from coaches in other programs.

In fact, there was a coach in the Big East (he was recently let go) who, for years, called me “The Georgetown Guy”. To be fair, the last few seasons he’s called me “Mook”. A few other coaches poke fun at me for the time I spend around the program.

After last night’s 67-51 season-ending loss to UConn, I left the Garden late, and I walked by an establishment that had a St. John’s and Creighton flag outside of it. After I dropped off my stuff, I headed back there. Why not be around fans from a couple of Georgetown’s Big East brethren?

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. Yes, they would like to see tangible change by, let’s say, next season, but there are fans who thought the close losses were maddening, though better than Ed Cooley’s predecessor.

If there was something that surprised me, it was the support for the style of play. The cry is for a style that defines a winning Georgetown program with an understanding that it might not look pretty. I had more fans say that if Georgetown’s wins looked like Seton Hall’s, they would sign up for that quicker than I’m receiving delay messages from Amtrak.

There isn’t a cry for a coach that plays a style ala UConn or St. John’s. By the way, it was refreshing to hear Georgetown fans express fatigue with the suggestions that the university should have made a run for Rick Pitino. It’s a tired conversation.

As the night turned into early morning, the talk moved to the portal. If the Hoyas hit in the portal with the players who are expected to contribute next season, Georgetown should be back to Friday night at The Garden and, maybe, just maybe play on Saturday night.

The main takeaway was the support for Ed Cooley and his staff. Alumni and fans made it clear they want this group of coaches to succeed. This isn’t a Providence situation where they wanted the coach to do just enough to be fired.

It was refreshing, and so not 2026, to see a fan base that has been through a lot for a generation support the coach who is doing everything to turn things around, even if some of those fans feel like the program is still behind the curve.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. Conference POTY for Hofstra, Cruz Davis, never really was able to get going, finishing with 8 points.

Davis still made timely plays, especially down the stretch. Davis scored a tough spinning floater and drew two defenders to leave German Plotnikov open for a dagger three all in the final two minutes of gameplay.

But the anchor for the Pride in this championship game, as he has been all tournament, was CAA rookie of the year, Preston Edmead. Edmead was absolutely incredible, a step up from his all conference caliber play in the regular season, for Head Coach Speedy Claxton who knows a thing or two about being a high level small guard.

Edmead had 16 in the first half, getting to the charity stripe and hitting some really tough shots over the bevy of defenders the Hawks threw at him. The second half was more of the same as he threw in 10 more baskets to get some separation from Monmouth. This is extremely gratifying for the Pride community as the last time they won the tournament, they did not go dancing.

Back when Coach Claxton was an assistant coach to Joe Mahilich, Hofstra won the CAA’s 2020 conference tournament. However just days later, the covid 19 pandemic would take this away from them. This time, they will not be denied and wait to find out their next matchup when the bracket drops Sunday.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. After struggling in the first half, Kavion McClain scored on the first 3 possessions of the second to help Monmouth surge for a lead after being kept an arms distance away the majority of the game. With McClain, Coach King Rice’s squad was clicking on all cylinders, applying game pressure until the final buzzer.

Jason Rivera-Torres was another big scoring factor for the Hawks, getting into the paint and using his size and length to dominate around the basket. In the end though, it was not enough to help Monmouth make the NCAAT. Freshman big man Stefanos Spartalis finished his season on a high note, dropping 16 and 11. Retaining him, Rivera-Torres, and sophomore guard Justin Ray should give the Hawks enough to be preseason favorites in the CAA come fall, key word being retaining.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. The Hoyas didn’t get their first points until Jeremiah William’s layup with 17 minutes left. The problems continued on that side of the floor, likely prompting some fans to recall the 1-23 second half when the two teams met in Chicago.

But the short-handed Hoyas eventually got into a little groove, erasing an eight-point DePaul lead in the first half to tie it at 19 on a layup by Malik Mack, but DePaul led at the half, 24-19.

Throughout all the soul-crushing losses, the Hoyas never packed it in, and tonight followed that trend.

Georgetown scored the first six points in the second half. What was telling was that all six points came on layups.

After Layden Blocker hit a three-pointer to tie the game, Julius Halaifonua hit a short jumper in the paint to quickly grab the lead back. The game was never tied, and DePaul never led the rest of the game.

A Vince Iwuchukwu-led 6-0 run pushed the Hoyas’ lead to 35-28. Eventually, the lead grew to 10 on a Caleb Williams layup.

DePaul made one last run. The Blue Demons got a dunk by NJ Benson, followed by back-to-back three-pointers by Kruz McClure, cutting Georgetown’s lead to two, forcing a timeout.

The Hoyas responded with back-to-back jumpers by Jeremiah Williams and Mack. RJ Smith cut the lead in half with a three-pointer, but undoubtedly one of the biggest shots of the game came next. With Georgetown struggling on the next offensive possession, the Hoyas got a corner three from Iwuchukwu to push it back to six.

The air went out of DePaul’s sails after that, and the Hoyas closed the show.

Top Georgetown Players

Iwuchukwu 17 points 14 rebounds

J Williams 17 points

Mack 16 points 6 rebounds 4 assists

If you want more information about the game, subscribe to MTC Media Sports.

What the crowd did not know before tipoff was that the game would be all of that and much more.

The best way to paint this picture for those who haven’t seen it by now would be to point to the box score. Towson would go 23-62 from the field.

As for Hofstra? 24-63. A game separated by one shot, and it turned out to be the buzzer-beating dagger from the CAA’s Rookie of the Year, point guard Preston Edmead. The story all year for the Pride has been the absolutely phenomenal backcourt of CAA Player of the Year Cruz Davis and All-Conference second-teamer Edmead.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. The Tigers made it a priority to make Davis take really tough shots, and in the first half, he missed them, not scoring until under 2 minutes left in the half. The second half, however, was a different story as the Davis show got going, scoring 16 of his 18 in the latter half. Foul trouble put him on the bench for extended periods of time, and this is where controversy showed its head for the first (not the last) time in the game.

As the two teams began overtime, Davis picked up what the Hofstra coaching staff, along with everyone else in the arena, thought was his fourth foul. Screens around the arena flipped from 3 to 4 under the foul column of Davis’ name. So when the referees raised up a five on his fingers after consulting the scorers’ table, the Towson faithful went crazy.

This felt like it opened the door for Towson to win the game. Instead, as mentioned earlier, Preston Edmead had other plans. With Davis struggling in the first half and being in and out of the lineup in the second with fouls, Edmead had really taken control of the game. Hitting a series of threes in the first half and finishing a few tough drives to the basket, along with a stepback and a lob to get the Pride into OT. With 5 seconds left in the game, Edmead dribbled to well beyond the right three-point arc, crossed once, then crossed twice, and nailed a deep three to send Hofstra to Championship Tuesday.

The unsung hero of the night, as head coach Speedy Claxton put it, was center Silas Sunday, who has done a masterful job throughout the tournament of keeping possessions alive for his team. Grabbing 11 rebounds, including a huge offensive rebound late in the game. Hofstra has a date with Monmouth Tuesday night at 7 pm, with a chance to go to the NCAA tournament on the line.

As for the Tigers, just utter heartbreak. After being picked first in the preseason, Towson stumbled through conference play, grabbing the conference’s 7 seed, before arriving in DC. As the conference tournament began, it felt like Towson had figured it out, knocking out Hampton before boat racing second-seeded Charleston.

This was in large part due to their pair of all-conference guys in Dylan Williamson and Tyler Tejada. Tejada set a conference tournament record, scoring 94 points in 3 games. It was slow for Tejada in the first, scoring 8, but by the time the second half rolled around, he could not miss. His main offense is short rolls to the basket, giving him space to create out of pick-and-rolls with Williamson. Dylan Williamson had really struggled in the first half, going 2-9 from the floor, but caught absolute fire in the second. Williamson is the one who kept Towson close and eventually took a lead, following three straight ridiculously tough baskets in a row.

The duo combined for 44 of the 65 Towson points. As previously mentioned, more controversy was to come following Davis fouling out, this time at the expense of the Tigers. In the overtime period, the Tigers were playing offense-defense with center Mo Seck and wing Jaquan Womack. Following a basket, HC Pat Skerry rushed down the Towson sideline to call a timeout to substitute Seck back into the game to match up with Sunday. The only issue is that the ref never heard him.

The Tiger bench went wild to draw the ref’s attention, but by the time one looked over, Hofstra had inbounded the ball. When Towson got a stop, it seemed like it wouldn’t matter, but that’s when Sunday grabbed his 11th rebound of the game, giving the Pride another possession and causing more time to tick off the clock. Minutes later, the Tigers’ season was over. This week provided Coach Skerry with a lot of positives to move forward with, especially with a lot of the roster being eligible to return. Keeping his stars out of the portal will be crucial.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. Junior guard Tyler Tejada had 30 points in the 81-56 win.

Up next was Hofstra and the CAA Player of the Year, Cruz Davis.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. Defensively, they crowded him and packed the paint. They did a good job of not fouling on pump fakes and step-throughs. Davis didn’t get his first points of the game until he got a dunk with 35 seconds left.

As well as the Tigers did with Davis, Towson was only up one at the halftime.

In the second half, Davis scored eight of Hofstra’s first 11 points, and the back-and-forth nature of the second half was in full swing.

Tejada started getting help on offense from Dylan Williamson. Tejada hit a jumper in the paint, and with 20 seconds left, Jaquan Womack’s stick back tied the game at 65.

Edmead dribbled the clock down and was pushed to the wing, where he hit a three-pointer with .4 seconds for the 68-65 win.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. Coming into the tournament, the team I was most excited to see live was Hofstra, and they met all my expectations and more.

The Pride were led tonight (as they have been all season) by a truly electric backcourt in CAA rookie of the year and second team all-conference point guard Preston Edmead, and the CAA’s player of the year Cruz Davis. Davis quickly showed everyone in the gym why he was the player of the year, scoring 18 of his 30 points in the first half. The positional length of W&M didn’t affect him at all as he got to his spots easily and shot a ridiculously efficient 60 percent from the field tonight. His backcourt mate

Edmead blew me away with his control of the game as a freshman. He controlled the tempo and lived around the basket, drawing fouls, not letting his poor shooting night from the field deter him. Edmead finished with 13. The rest of the team followed the backcourt’s lead and completed a real team effort.

Big man Silas Sunday absolutely controlled the paint finishing with 12 rebounds, 5 offensive. The ones he could not grab he did a great job of smacking out to teammates.

Finally, it’s impossible to write about this game without mentioning German Plotnikov who hit 2 the first two Pride threes to begin the game. He did not cool off from there, making 5-9 of his 3 point field goals and finishing with 17. The Pride are back in action at 8:30 pm Tuesday to face the Towson Tigers, fresh off of their upset of the second seeded Charleston Cougars.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. On the year, W&M have made taking a lot of threes and backdoor cuts the staple of their halfcourt offense, and both were completely negated tonight. The backdoor cuts were not there, in large part due to the size around the basket for Hofstra. The outside attack also struggled, going 5-22 from the three-point line.

Jo’el Emmanuel was a bright spot, using his 6’6 frame and length to be as active as possible, getting rebounds and blocks. He hit outside shots and then battled around the basket, earning trips to the free throw line.

More important than the loss itself, however, is the health of Junior Reese Miller who was knocked unconscious minutes into the second half. After spending a few minutes on the ground, he was able to walk off the court with assistance. He was quickly ruled out for the game, and no further detail has been provided.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. There wasn’t anything amazing on display from the Tiger defense; they just straight-up outpaced the Cougars on offense. This was in large part due to electric scoring performances from Towson’s twosome of All-CAA 3rd-team members, Dylan Williamson and Tyler Tejada.

Williamson has been known as a microwave scorer by DMV basketball fans since his days at Our Lady of Good Counsel, but tonight he showed the crowd his ability to run a team, racking up 7 assists to go with his 13 points. As for Tejada, his conference tournament tear continues as he scored 30 points on 11/17 shooting.

The night before, he had 35 to eliminate the Hampton Pirates. The team followed their leaders and went a ridiculous 50 percent from the 3-point line, completely leaving the Cougars in the dust. Towson reminded everyone why they were the preseason pick for the conference and look to do the same tomorrow at 8:30 as they face the winner of Hofstra and William & Mary.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication. The best way I could describe it is the Cougars just looked stunned. Yes, they had lost to Towson early in conference play, but they have since found their footing and won 11 of their last 14. But as the deficit ballooned, the Cougs’ life just seemed to drain from their being.

Perhaps the saddest part of tonight’s loss is that All-CAA first-team guard Jlynn Counter has played his last game for the program. Counter anchored head coach Chris Mack’s group all year, averaging about 16.5 and 6 a night. He had his fingerprints on all of the successes the group had tonight, but granted, the successes were limited. Coach Mack has the potential to bring back a talented group led by All-CAA 3rd team center Christian Reeves and conference defensive player of the year Chol Machot.

If the Cougars don’t look to bolster the holes left by Counter and fellow senior Connor Hickman in the portal, the freshman trio of Chadlyn Traylor, Martin Kalu, and Chris Davis Jr are all potential candidates for bigger roles next season.

MTC Media is a reader-supported publication.
